The Cabildo of Tenerife makes available a collection of traditional clothing patterns

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 22 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo of Tenerife, through the Traditional Clothing Sector Council, has made available to citizens a collection of patterns of the different garments used to make up the traditional attire of men or women. The objective of this tool is to promote the correct use of the island’s traditional costumes and ensure our identity.

The Minister of Employment, Education and Youth, Efraín Medina, explained that this second edition of traditional Canarian clothing patterns “aims to improve some aspects of the previous edition and collect some suggestions from users, such as reducing the number of patterns per canvas or indicating measurements on some straight lines.

Likewise, Efraín Medina thanked the participation of all the people who have collaborated “it is a pleasure to work with such a professional team, with such capacity, it is a work that benefits the entire Island and that helps us conserve, rigorous, our historical legacy and our hallmarks as a people,” he indicated.

To facilitate its use, each component is described and how it should be used. In this way, the folder is made up of three notable elements: the identification tables of each garment, where the details to be followed to correctly obtain the patterns are described in detail; the boxes, where all the pieces that make up each garment are shown with their name and identification number and the canvases from which the patterns to make the garments are obtained, separated into men’s and women’s patterns, with different types of lines and colors.

These patterns will be accessible to all those who at some point tackle the making of a traditional costume, so that they have the guarantee that the piece they make complies with traditional values.

THE PATTERN COLLECTION

The selected patterns that make up this ‘database’ correspond, on the one hand, to the basic garments, common in all clothing, and the most requested variants that are part of specific models that today are worn by folk groups and by individuals.

The main objective of this new resource that the Sector Council makes available to citizens is that this collection of patterns serves as a tool for those people interested in making a traditional costume. Although the content of the folder has focused on Tenerife clothing, the vast majority of the clothing is common to the entire Archipelago, therefore, it can be used for the other islands. In addition to this dossier, an edition has been made in another format, with pieces made of cardboard, in order to reach all audiences (senior centers, people without experience in clothing, etc.), this system being more easy understanding and use.

THE SECTORAL COUNCIL

Among the objectives of this body is to carry out an analysis and debate on the existing reality on the Island regarding the use of traditional clothing; the promotion of the development of policies aimed at promoting its proper use, and the promotion and support for the dissemination and preservation of artisan trades linked to the typical and traditional clothing of Tenerife.

Likewise, the Traditional Clothing Sector Council tries to ensure the conservation of our traditions in traditional clothing and is made up of researchers, artisans and experts in the field. Along these lines, the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Davila, encourages one of the strategic lines of the Council to be the involvement of the teachers and students of the Canary Islands in raising awareness about the correct use of traditional clothing as an identity sign.
