Tenerife’s Cabildo Critiques ‘Garbage’ Application for Stifling Recycling Efforts

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 4 December (EUROPA PRESS) –

The second vice president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, José Miguel Ruano (CC), described the transposition of the community directive, which will lead to an increase in the waste collection fee, as “inflexible” on Wednesday due to its failure to encourage recycling.

“This will impact all residents, both those who recycle and those who do not. From a regulatory perspective, it does not appear to be an effective solution,” he remarked during a press conference to discuss the agreements of the Government Council, in which he acknowledged that there is a risk that this will ultimately result in a tax hike for the public.

He stated that the Cabildo seeks to “assist” the local councils, as mentioned in the recent meeting of the CIAT (Insular Council of Territorial Administration), where it assured that it would cover the expenses during the transition period until 1 April.

He also pointed out that decisions amounting to 30 million euros have been made regarding the management of clean points, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on the councils.

“This will remain a challenging issue, not only in Tenerife but throughout the Canary Islands and indeed across Spain,” he noted.

The vice president of the Cabildo, Lope Afonso (PP), commented that the implementation of community regulations seems to be more influenced by “an ideological agenda” than by its practical execution, as it “lacks the necessary tools” to provide the recycling services that residents should receive in return for the increased taxes.

In this regard, he indicated that the Cabildo intends to collaborate closely with the councils, recognising that it is an “unjust situation” due to the “absence of resources” from the local authorities.
