Tenerife Firefighters Reinstate Safeguard Plan to Protect Cultural Treasures

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 11 Oct (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Tenerife Consortium for the Prevention, Fire Extinction, and Rescue has reactivated the Safeguard Plan aimed at protecting the island’s municipal historical and artistic assets during emergencies.

Iván Martín, the insular director of Security and Emergencies, convened a meeting with Isabel de Esteban, the insular director of Historical Heritage and Planning, along with technicians from the field to coordinate their efforts.

Iván Martín elaborated that they have introduced the reactivation of the Safeguard Plan to both the Historical Heritage department of the Cabildo and the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage within the Government of the Canary Islands to shield historical and artistic monuments found on Tenerife.

“The goal is to collaborate in a coordinated manner with local councils and institutions that possess heritage and historical and artistic monuments such as the Bishopric, ensuring the cultural heritage of the municipalities is preserved while guaranteeing the safety and protection of these assets against potential emergencies or risk scenarios,” he stated.

Iván Martín emphasised that the focus is on “working towards prevention and preparedness for potential adverse events such as fires or natural calamities that could impact historical monuments.” “This facilitates the development of prompt and effective intervention strategies by the Tenerife Firefighters Consortium,” he added.

Meanwhile, Isabel de Esteban highlighted that this agreement represents “a significant milestone showcasing the collaboration that exists between the various sectors of the insular Corporation.” “From the Historical Heritage perspective, it is crucial to receive guidance from the Consortium for Prevention, Fire Extinction, and Rescue of Tenerife to respond to situations and incidents that may threaten the safety of the island’s heritage,” she remarked.

The principal aim of the Safeguard Plan is to guarantee the security of all real estate assets that are under special protection. It features a specific database comprising essential information about the protected buildings and historical assets, such as architectural plans, maps, photographs, material characteristics, potential fire spread dangers, and items stored within, among other elements.
