Tenerife Draws 2,500 Enthusiasts for Urban Dance Extravaganza

Approximately 2,500 individuals attended the ninth edition of Tenerife Urban Dance on Sunday, an event that has become one of the key occasions for urban dance in the Canary Islands, featuring a competition that saw participation from 680 entrants.

This urban dance contest has established itself as a benchmark event in the islands, with participants this year competing across categories such as children’s, junior, couples, and absolute categories, as stated by the Cabildo of Tenerife in a press release.

The event saw the presence of the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila; the vice president and tourism advisor, Lope Afonso; the Minister for Sports, Yolanda Moliné; the Minister for Youth, Serafín Mesa; and the insular director of Foreign Action and Institutional Relations, Pedro González.

Lope Afonso remarked that “the high level of participation this year affirms Tenerife Urban Dance as the premier event for urban dance in the Canary Islands, serving as the grand finale to the extensive range of activities” carried out under the Tenerife Urbano initiative.

Afonso added that this event exemplifies the objectives of the Sports department of the Cabildo, which aims to promote sports participation among the island’s residents through engaging events alongside federated sports.

Yolanda Moliné asserted that “Tenerife Urban Dance stands as a platform for the nurturing of both local and international talent, marking it as an indispensable event for urban dance enthusiasts.”

The victors in the children’s category were LS Tribu, Le Move, and Emilias; in the junior category, the winners were LS, Nikas, and Le Move; for couples, the champions were Lucas and Ulysses, alongside Xiomara and Gisela, and Mamarrachas; and in the absolute category, the winners included LS Tribu, Gipsy’s, and Yugen.

Over €3,500 in cash prizes were awarded, along with trophies, special mention certificates, diplomas, and t-shirts.

In this edition, the Tenerife Urban Dance 2024 jury comprised three international authorities in this discipline, namely Marie Kerida (Belgium), who has participated in events such as HipHop International Las Vegas and World of Dance; Matthew Richards (Jamaica), a dancer and choreographer who has collaborated with Rihanna, Drake, and Sean Paul; and María Pérez (Spain), who has worked with Shakira, Rosalía, and Chanel, was part of the musical Malinche by Nacho Cano, and participated with Chanel in Eurovision 2022 with the song Slomo.
