Seismic Swarm Shakes Las Cañadas del Teide with Over 500 Quakes

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 14 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has observed in the early hours of Thursday, between 04:00 and 07:00, a ‘seismic swarm’ comprising at least 500 tremors occurring southwest of Pico Viejo, in the same region where similar incidents have been noted in recent years – specifically in October 2016, June 2019, and June and July 2022.

This activity commenced with a sequence of 10 tremors of magnitude less than 1.1, occurring at depths of between 8 and 12 kilometres in the area. This was followed by prolonged signals lacking defined seismic phases and exhibiting high-frequency content, which subsequently transitioned into an extensive series of hundreds of events of small and comparable magnitude occurring at nearly regular intervals, resembling a “drumbeat,” the IGN highlights in a statement.

Due to the low intensity of the recorded seismic parameters, smaller magnitude earthquakes have been identified by the automatic system but are not located with the required quality for inclusion in the official IGN catalogue, the institute specifies.
