Santa Cruz Kicks Off Phase Two of San Martín Street Renovation Tomorrow

Following the completion of the initial section, which is now open for traffic, the upcoming works will enhance the accessibility of the road, spanning from the junction with San Miguel Street to Méndez Núñez Street. The work will be conducted between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with completion anticipated by the end of the year.

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, through its Public Services department, announces that on Tuesday, 5th November, the second phase of the renovation works on San Martín Street will commence. This undertaking is part of the Special Plan for the Protection of the Historical Complex of El Toscal. Similar to the first phase, this stage will involve the installation of new sanitation, supply, and stormwater systems, the upgrading of the lighting infrastructure, and the low and medium voltage telecommunications conduits. The works will be carried out from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and are expected to conclude by the end of the year.

The first segment of the project, which stretches from Méndez Núñez Street to Santiago Street, will be accessible to traffic starting tomorrow after the initial layer of asphalt has been laid today. The final wearing layer will be applied once all three phases of the renovation have been completed.

The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, commended “the excellent progress of the work in this initial phase” and highlighted that “these improvements will enhance the accessibility of the street, aiding in the revitalisation of the commercial areas and improving the overall appearance of the road.”

Furthermore, the Councilor for Public Services, Carlos Tarife, expressed gratitude for “the patience shown by the residents of this street in the El Toscal neighbourhood” and reminded everyone that “in this second phase, the intersection at San Miguel Street will reopen, and the closure at the junction with Santiago Street will be removed to ensure continuity in the works.”

Additionally, the mayor clarified that “the segments of Santiago Street, between the intersections with San Antonio and Señor de Las Tribulaciones, will be accessible only to residents who need to enter or exit their garages.” He further noted that for the section of San Martín Street, between the junction with San Miguel and the El Toscal garage, access to garages will be permitted outside working hours from 08:00 to 16:00.

Residents can access the garages on Santiago Street from Señor de Las Tribulaciones Street and San Antonio Street, based on their location. The garages on San Martín Street (El Toscal, number 43) can be accessed from either Méndez Núñez Street or San Miguel Street.

The City Council reminds everyone that the third phase will commence from the intersection of La Rosa Street to the junction with Santiago Street. These works aim to enhance the accessibility of San Martín Street, proposing a three-metre roadway and sidewalks of varying widths depending on the section, while maintaining accessibility criteria. This will ensure that two of the main arteries of the neighbourhood are fully connected and accessible.

Moreover, for the pavement restoration, AC 16 SURF hot mix asphalt with NFU modified bitumen (from out-of-use tyres) will be employed, which helps to reduce noise from passing vehicles.

The City Council urges users of these roads to remain vigilant of signage indicating new vehicular routes in the affected area.
