The Works and Infrastructure department of La Laguna City Council has successfully finalised the enhancement project it was undertaking on the pavement of the central Plaza del Adelantado. This initiative aimed to rectify the deformations and irregularities that had persisted in various sections of the ground for some time.
The project commenced in March this year and was concluded in August, ultimately encompassing more areas than initially anticipated and prioritising the most affected zones, as per information from the Works department.
Regarding the efforts made to enhance the paving, they clarified that the focus was on the surface of the square and did not involve extensive excavation. The operation included removing dry roots by the Parks and Gardens service, and the flowerbeds were expanded to minimise impact on the trees in the vicinity.
As previously mentioned when the work started last March, it appeared that the deformation of the pavement was largely due to the dryness of the soil, coupled with damage caused by tree roots.
The councillor in charge of the area, Ángel Chinea, highlights that with the recently completed interventions, “we have succeeded in enhancing the accessibility and safety conditions of this vital space in the city, which is so significant for the residents of Laguna and the numerous tourists who visit us daily”.
“Plaza del Adelantado had several issues that required urgent attention, particularly concerning the pavement, and we are extremely pleased with the outcome of these works. They have enabled us to increase the area of the tree pits while adapting the surroundings without compromising the health of the large trees that enhance this public space,” added the councillor.
Moreover, although the initial intention when the project began in March was for it to be a “temporary solution” for a more extensive rehabilitation scheme, the plan has since shifted. Given the successful outcome of the works, “a supplementary action is currently ruled out,” explained the department. Nonetheless, they indicated that a preventive measure similar to the completed work is likely to be undertaken next year.
