Officers from the Civil Guard’s Nature Protection Service (Seprona) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as part of the Annual Plan for Comprehensive Control of Fishing Activities, have undertaken several patrols during which they caught four individuals engaging in illegal fishing in Garachico. They were operating across two recreational boats and were “significantly” surpassing the permitted quantity of fish allowable per person per day.
Following meticulous surveillance of various recreational vessels in conjunction with tracking some of the offenders’ vehicles, the officers successfully located these four individuals with a total of 211 kilos of fish, comprising species such as blackmouth, samas, amberjacks, snappers, goatfish, moray eels, bishop, along with other smaller varieties.
In total, 161 kilos were obtained from one boat and 50 kilos from the other, all captured unlawfully, as they greatly exceeded the maximum allowable catch for the type of licence they possessed (recreational fishing), which is why the catch was confiscated, according to the Civil Guard.
As stipulated in Law 17/2003, dated April 10, concerning Fishing in the Canary Islands, the maximum daily catch permitted under this type of licence is 5 kilograms per person each day. Therefore, all individuals involved have committed a serious violation, conclude the Civil Guard.
