The Army, the Civil Guard, the National and local Police, along with other security forces and agencies such as Firefighters, Forestry Brigades (Brifor), Samur and Civil Protection are mobilising all their resources to support the Solidarity Telemarathon. The initiative by Mírame Televisión #CompartirCanarias aims to gather aid for over 40,000 individuals in the Archipelago who are facing extreme poverty on the 12th in Mercatenerife.
This event, which will be streamed live on the channel managed by Manuel Artiles, seeks to foster solidarity particularly for the 6,000 children living in these dire circumstances.
The largest act of solidarity in the Archipelago has also received backing from Intesa Canarias, which, as always, will provide its fleet of trucks to the organisation. More than 100 vehicles will ensure that the generosity of the islanders reaches families in need.
The Telemarathon signifies a logistical operation aimed at ensuring that donations from individuals, organisations and businesses reach 228 charitable organisations through Food Banks. Mírame Televisión has arranged partnerships with two shipping companies to deliver donations across all the islands.
This initiative originated during the 2008 crisis and has counted on the kindness of the islanders for over a decade to support the most vulnerable.
Currently, 33.8% of the population, nearly 750,000 individuals, are at risk of experiencing chronic poverty and social exclusion. This means one in three canaries is in a precarious situation. Furthermore, the Canary Islands have a reported average income of only 10,116 euros per year, the lowest in Spain, and it is the autonomous community where the cost of living has escalated the most over the past year, with a 12% rise. Additionally, this year, Food Banks will not receive European funding to assist the most disadvantaged families. In light of this situation, the campaign calls for the donation of non-perishable food items, essential baby supplies, clothing, footwear, new toys, and personal hygiene products.
The organisation has set up authorised collection points to make donating easier. The website www.mirametv.com, the group’s social media platforms, and special programming will provide daily updates on the list of required items. Moreover, Mírame Televisión offers groups, companies, and entities the contact number 691 62 57 97 and the email [email protected] as ways to get involved.
