The Cabildo of Tenerife has sanctioned the proposal during the Government Council to confer special recognition upon Pedro Benítez Reyes, an exemplary potter and guardian of artisan traditions.
The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, highlighted that for the insular Corporation, “it is a privilege to pay tribute to a craftsman of the calibre of Pedro Benítez Reyes, who has been and will continue to be a vital reference in the understanding and preservation of pottery in Tenerife.”
This recognition will occur on November 22, as part of the Insular Crafts Day, “a day on which we honour those who have devoted their lives and talents to sustaining the artisanal practices that form our identity as a community,” Dávila added.
Hailing from Güímar and profoundly connected to the land and culture of the Canary Islands, Pedro has distinguished himself through his remarkable career and unwavering commitment to traditional pottery. Through his efforts, the knowledge of clay has been transmitted from one generation to the next, safeguarding the essence of our customs.
From the outset, he demonstrated an unrelenting curiosity about the origins of his craft, training alongside the last renowned potters of the islands and evolving into a true master of the ancestral techniques that typify our pottery.
