Eight-Year Prison Sentence Sought for Tenerife Rape Suspect

The Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife convened a hearing this Monday in which a woman accuses her flatmate of having sexually assaulted her, having entered her room without consent, which he had attempted to do on a previous occasion. The Prosecutor’s Office is seeking a sentence of eight years in prison, a restraining order of 500 metres for twelve years, compensation amounting to 10,000 euros, mandatory attendance at a sexual education course for five years, and a ten-year prohibition on working with minors.

The accused refuted the allegations, asserting that they had engaged in sexual relations frequently, and that on the night of 23 June 2023, he discovered her in the communal area of the residence they shared in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and that it was she who invited him into her room.

She acknowledged that she had consumed alcohol that evening “but not excessively” and believed that he had also been drinking. She was unsure about the cause of the injuries on her wrists and chest but mentioned that she had recently been in her room with two males.

The officers who attended to the woman stated that she insisted on speaking with a female officer and described her condition as “complete shock”, to the extent that she was unable to form coherent words and did not seem to be under the influence of alcohol.

The trial will resume next week as the landlord could not be reached to testify.
