Educators Condemn Vandalism at ULL Feminist Exhibit, Accuse Rector of Censorship

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE Nov. 29 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Feminist Teachers for Coeducation collective expressed their dismay this Friday regarding the acts of vandalism directed at the exhibition ‘Moments of Feminism’, which was recently launched at the University of La Laguna (ULL) and ultimately removed following criticism from LGTBIQ+ organisations concerning alleged “transphobia” in certain messages.

In their statement, they outlined that the exhibition faced acts of vandalism by a group of “transactivists”, with speakers and women attending the conference “being reprimanded at its conclusion.”

The educators questioned the decision of ULL’s management, stating that “instead of supporting the exhibition’s organisers and condemning the violence encountered, they have succumbed to the intimidation of transactivists and opted to withdraw the exhibition, issuing an unacceptable declaration of censorship, disdain and an institutional assault on feminism and, by extension, on all women.”

Furthermore, they emphasised that “under no circumstances, particularly in a university setting, should ideas and opinions be silenced or censored; instead, they should be open to debate and scrutiny.”

Consequently, they remarked that “the rationale of coexistence should not be used to mute feminism,” expressing hope that the “forum for dialogue and extensive, diverse debate” that ULL has promised in its statement “will involve feminist women and that this more inclusive academic environment they advocate will encompass women and their relentless struggle for equality and freedom from violence.”

They asserted that “the respect, empathy, and equity they claim to champion are mere hollow words when contradicted by their actions.”

For this reason, they call upon the rector of the University of La Laguna, Francisco Javier García Rodríguez, to restore and reinstate the exhibition ‘Moments of Feminism’ and issue a “public apology” to the organisers.

“We also urge a strong stance against the censorship imposed by the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, the Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, and the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun,” the statement concludes.
