SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE Nov. 28 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The vice president of the Government of the Canary Islands and leader of the PP in the islands, Manuel Domínguez, asserted this Thursday that his party will convene next week with both the central and Canarian governments to endeavour to establish an agreement regarding the reform of immigration legislation, making the transfer of unaccompanied migrant minors compulsory.
“We are committed to this sit-in,” he stated to the press, emphasising that his party is “closer” to the Canary Islands Government than to the central administration, which has left the Canary Islands “isolated” and “has neglected them.”.
Moreover, he anticipates that once the PP engages in discussions, the PSOE will also “fulfil” its responsibilities by demanding the deployment of Frontex in the Canary Islands, increased financial resources from the EU, the establishment of an asylum office, or exploring the option of transferring minors to member states.
Domínguez expresses “genuine optimism” regarding the possibility of finalising an agreement based on the ‘Canarian Pact for Immigration’, which entails amending article 35 of the immigration law, establishing a “minimum quota” of minors for each autonomous community, and ensuring funding until they reach adulthood.
“I believe that the Popular Party has acted as a responsible entity, maintaining coherence from the outset in the demands it has raised and demonstrating a willingness to modify and support the initiatives from the Canary Islands, which has been evident, clear, and public from the beginning,” he stated.
He also highlighted the “crucial role” his party has played in attempting to resolve the “political tensions” and “confrontations” arising in Spain surrounding immigration, especially when individuals risk their lives to reach the shores of the islands or are not treated with the dignity they deserve.
“We are managing to distinguish the frustrations from the urgent needs that the Canary Islands face at this moment, which is evolving into a matter of national concern, and it is within this context that I have urged the party to accept that responsibility, which it is indeed undertaking,” he elaborated.
