Clavijo Promises Meeting to Discuss Immigration Law Reform and Bridge Differences

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE Nov. 27 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The leader of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has taken it as “a given” this Wednesday that there will be a discussion with the central government and the PP to tackle the amendment of the immigration legislation, expressing hopes to “bridge differences” ahead of the Conference of Presidents on December 13.

In remarks to the press, he noted that “the encouraging aspect is that a meeting will occur,” notwithstanding the recent criticisms from the PP’s parliamentary spokesperson, Miguel Tellado, who has insisted on supporting the immigration agreement between his party and the Government of the Canary Islands. Clavijo mentioned that they will “be able to collaborate” on revising the law to facilitate the distribution of migrant minors among the autonomous communities.

“That was unimaginable just a week ago, so I regard it as good news,” he explained.

The president of the Canary Islands has stressed that it is “crucial” to amend article 35 and that the leading political parties in the country “should not leave the Canary Islands to cope with the challenges they are facing” nor “those boys and girls who cannot receive the care they need and deserve.”

“We will await the meeting, and when we convene, we will determine if that significant consensus is achievable,” he stated.

Clavijo added that the Canary Islands plan to present the agreement from the prior meeting regarding the Immigration Pact in the Canary Islands, which pertains to the reform of the immigration law, asserting that “the Canary Islands understand what actions they wish to pursue.”

The president has argued that the meeting is set to occur next week rather than this Thursday as originally anticipated, due to the “complicated schedules” that hinder the participation of all parties, and he acknowledged that every negotiation begins with an initial offer and requires some “compromise to reach the substantial agreement.”
