VALVERDE (EL HIERRO), 14 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The town of La Frontera (El Hierro) is set to host the second edition of the Pineapple Fair on the 20th and 21st of September, an event designed to showcase the significance of pineapple cultivation in El Hierro and the excellence of this fruit, while encouraging its consumption.

This event is co-hosted by the La Frontera Town Council and the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty of the Canary Islands Government, in collaboration with the public entity Gestión del Medio Rural de Canarias (GMR Canarias). It is also supported by the Canarian Institute of Agricultural Research (ICIA), the Cabildo of El Hierro, and local producers from the island.

The goal of this initiative is to bolster and promote a key crop on the island of Meridian, which has served as an economic engine since the 1980s, as stated by the regional government in their press release.

The 2nd Pineapple Fair is part of the Canary Islands Government’s ‘Growing Together’ initiative, which fosters collaboration between the tourism sector and the primary sector to champion local produce as a vital component in establishing the Archipelago as a premier gastronomic destination, under the ‘Volcanic Xperience’ branding.

To raise awareness and promote this product, the 2nd Pineapple Fair will feature a diverse array of activities in the Benito Padrón square in La Frontera.

Over the two days, the event will host various stalls selling these products and will provide numerous gastronomic, technical, and recreational activities. This will include live cooking demonstrations, food pairings with wines from the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) of El Hierro, and informative presentations addressing agricultural and scientific topics related primarily to pest and disease management in this crop through various methods, as well as soil disinfection techniques.

Additionally, there will be discussions on the nutritional benefits of the fruit, audiovisual displays on the origins and significance of the crop, musical performances, a dessert competition, and more.
