A total of 159 migrants of sub-Saharan descent reached the port of La Restinga this morning, escorted by a Maritime Rescue vessel, according to sources from the public agency.
The cayuco was detected by a fisherman three miles (4.8 km) south of the island of El Hierro, prompting the Rescue Coordination Centre in Tenerife to deploy the sea guard Talía.
The sea guard guided the canoe to La Restinga port, where all 159 individuals disembarked, including 11 women and 6 minors. Upon arrival, they received assistance from health personnel and volunteers from the Red Cross.
