SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 16 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Governing Council has sanctioned the approval of multi-year funding amounting to 21,302,337 euros for the financing of the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GRANTECAN) up until 2030. This allocation, aimed at maintaining this pivotal scientific infrastructure, forms part of the agreement made between the General State Administration (AGE) and the Autonomous Community.

The Minister for Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture, Migdalia Machín, emphasised the significance of this endeavour: “Through this action, we ensure that the Gran Telescopio de Canarias remains an integral component in astronomical research. The approbation of this multi-year investment not only guarantees its operation but also its capacity to continue facilitating notable scientific breakthroughs.”

The agreement stipulates an annual allocation of expenses, enabling the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands to meet its financial obligations to GRANTECAN, thus ensuring its optimal operation and its role as a critical resource in the observation of the cosmos.

“With this initiative, we reinforce our pledge to position the Canary Islands on the global stage of scientific research. The Gran Telescopio Canarias is a fundamental asset in this strategy, and its consistent funding assures that it will continue to enhance the prestige of our islands,” the Minister added.

Additionally, the agreement encompasses a total investment of 42,337,752 euros from the AGE, which bolsters the mutual commitment to maintain GRANTECAN at the forefront of scientific exploration.

The Government has ensured that this agreement will be presented to the Parliament of the Canary Islands, in line with current regulations.
