Canary Islands Push for Establishment of New Courts at Justice Sector Conference

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 18 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Minister for the Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice and Security of the Government of the Canary Islands, Nieves Lady Barreto, is set to attend the Sectoral Conference on the Administration of Justice this Friday in Córdoba, which will be led by Minister Félix Bolaños. During this meeting, she will emphasise the necessity for the Ministry to authorise the establishment of additional courts in the forthcoming year.

“The Canary Islands possess the highest litigation rate in Spain, and it is imperative that new judicial entities are authorised to assist in alleviating the workload,” stated Nieves Lady Barreto. She also noted that her department has inaugurated eight new courts this year, with a ninth scheduled to open in December. However, all of these correspond to units approved for the development of the judicial system in 2022 and 2023.

“We have made significant efforts in management and resource allocation to create these facilities and equip them with the essential material and staff resources. Nevertheless, we still face overloaded judicial bodies in the Canary Islands. We urge the Ministry, when approving the courts intended for establishment, to consider not only the population but also the litigation rates experienced in each region,” the minister explained.

In this regard, Nieves Lady Barreto highlighted that, despite the year nearing its conclusion, the Ministry has not yet provided any updates concerning the authorisation of new courts for 2024.

The Sectoral Conference of the Administration of Justice serves as a collaboration platform between the State Administration and the Administrative Authorities of the Autonomous Communities that have assumed responsibilities for providing the necessary material, financial, and personal resources for the functioning of the Justice Administration. Its primary aim is to foster coordinated efforts in these areas, guided by the principles of institutional loyalty, cooperation, and mutual respect in the exercise of the powers assigned to these Administrations.
