The Department of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands has concluded the first phase of the subsidy program aimed at promoting renewable energy and energy self-sufficiency in the public and water sectors. With a total budget granted of 33,789,851 euros, the program has made it possible to finance 241 projects throughout the entire archipelago.
This program, divided into two lines of action, has received a total of 319 applications, with 198 projects being granted for Line 1, focused on the promotion of renewable energies in the public sector, and 43 projects for Line 2, aimed at self-sufficiency. energy in the water sector. Together, these actions will provide 30.5 new megawatts of generation on the islands.
In the case of Line 1, the counselor of the autonomous department, Mariano H. Zapata, explained that aid has been granted for a total of 20,679,976 euros, destined for the implementation of 20.15 MW of new energy generation capacity in buildings and public infrastructures in the Canary Islands through the installation, among others, of photovoltaic panels.
Similarly, Line 2, focused on projects related to water management, has been granted 13,109,875 euros for the installation of 10.35 MW, “which contributes significantly to energy self-sufficiency in this crucial sector for the islands. “said Zapata.
He also detailed that among the beneficiary entities are 39 town councils throughout the Canary Islands, 4 councils and the two public universities of the islands, as well as other entities of the Institutional Public Sector. A fact that. As he noted, “it demonstrates our total support for public administrations that want to be part of this change of model towards the green transition.”
Likewise, he assured that work will continue on new lines of subsidies and recalled those that have recently been launched, and that are open until December 2, related to the use of spaces already in use (anthropized), the electrification of the nautical sector and the promotion of energy communities, all for a total amount of 24 million euros.
AGILE AND EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT
The counselor wanted to highlight the shock plan that was put in place to carry out the Next Generation funds, given that “upon entering the Ministry we found a worrying situation, with more than 23,000 unprocessed files and only 8 % execution”.
“We have met with the different actors involved, we have modified the bases of the subsidies, we have made readjustments in personnel management and we are meeting the milestones that we have set,” he explained.
Furthermore, he highlighted that with this new management model “we have turned this complex situation around and we are accelerating the granting of these funds so that the Canary Islands can advance quickly and without pause, thus achieving a renewable, self-sufficient and decarbonized horizon.”
