SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, December 4 (EUROPA PRESS) –
José Miguel Ruano, the second vice president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, emphasised this Wednesday the organisation’s “unwavering commitment” to the preservation of the Teide National Park once the transfer of responsibilities to the autonomous community is finalised on January 1.
In a press briefing to discuss the decisions made by the Government Council, he remarked that there will be “improved management” going forward, positioning Teide as the “gem in the environmental crown” of the entire archipelago.
Ruano has not concurred with ATAN’s critique regarding the delegation of powers, labelling it as “irresponsibility and moral degradation”. He pointed out that, as a “particularly striking example”, the current staff of environmental agents monitoring the park consists of merely four professionals, with two positions unfilled.
“The remaining environmental agents affiliated with the Island Council of Tenerife, although we are presently undergoing a selection process for 26 new environmental agents, cannot be assigned to the national park unless it is transferred to the jurisdiction of the Cabildo Island of Tenerife,” he stressed.
Ruano further expressed that the Cabildo is “demonstrating” its dedication to the national park, highlighting the funds allocated for the renovation of the Altavista refuge and the regulatory process for hiking access to the summit, aimed at safeguarding the safety of both hikers and rescue teams.
“I believe that Tenerife and its Cabildo are setting a standard for effective management concerning the national park, and the most crucial aspect is that when we receive the transfer from the Government, we can enhance the management of that transfer, which is what truly matters to citizens,” he remarked.
