Biomedicine Degree Launches at European University of the Canary Islands

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 9 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Governing Council of the Canary Islands has sanctioned, during its meeting on Monday, the establishment of a new official degree in Biomedicine at the European University of the Canary Islands.

This initiative, put forth by the University and supported by the Department of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture, led by Migdalia Machín, signifies a significant advancement in the educational offerings of the archipelago, particularly in sectors with substantial demand in health and research.

The Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedicine aims to provide specialised education in fields such as molecular biology, genetics, biotechnology, and biomedical research.

This programme addresses an increasing interest from students aspiring to pursue specialised careers in areas of significant scientific importance and potential, according to a statement from the Government.

The Canary Islands Agency for University Quality and Educational Evaluation (ACCUEE) has assessed and approved the introduction of the degree, ensuring its academic excellence.

In this regard, Migdalia Machín commended the efforts of the technical office, which oversees all processes related to the establishment of new academic qualifications in both public and private universities throughout the islands.

The minister underscored the significance of this new degree, stating that “biomedicine is a domain that not only meets the requirements of the health system but also fosters the advancement of new technologies and promotes scientific inquiry.”

In the first year of her leadership at the Ministry, nearly fifty new degrees have been processed and implemented in the universities of the Canary Islands, both public and private, demonstrating a clear commitment to enhancing and broadening higher education in the archipelago.

“The Canary Islands Government will persist in this direction, broadening and diversifying the educational offerings to create an academic environment that retains and attracts talent,” Machín remarked.

The establishment of this degree will not incur additional expenses for the regional administration.

The creation of this academic qualification is in accordance with the stipulations set forth by Royal Decree 822/2021 and Organic Law 2/2023 of the University System, ensuring that each new programme adheres to the overarching principles of the European Higher Education Area.
